Every sorting app promises a better order. Only a few can show you that the order worked. Here are the seven things worth checking before you install one — and where SellRank stands on each.
Search for a Shopify collection sorting app and you will find a dozen that all say the same thing: sort automatically, sell more. The feature lists look interchangeable. They are not. The differences that matter are mostly invisible on a listing page, so here is the checklist we use — written by the people who built one, which you should weigh accordingly, but every item is something you can verify for yourself.
1. Does it write into Shopify's own sort, or paint over it?
Some apps reorder the grid in the browser with JavaScript after the page loads. That means crawlers and link previews see the old order, the page flickers on slow connections, and anything that reads the collection through the API is out of step. The alternative is a server-side write into Shopify's native manual sort: the HTML is correct on first byte, and the order is real everywhere. Ask which one it does. SellRank writes server-side, position by position.
2. Where do its numbers come from?
An app that sorts by 'popularity' is only as good as its data. Apps that read Google Analytics inherit whatever is broken in your GA setup — consent gaps, ad blockers, a misconfigured property. A first-party engagement pixel that provisions itself on install measures your storefront directly, with no theme edits. SellRank ships its own pixel and treats GA4 as an optional backfill for history, not the source of truth.
3. Can it compose, or only sort?
- A single ranking is a blunt instrument — every collection gets the same logic.
- Percentage slots let the first 20% be proven sellers, the next 20% new arrivals, and the rest revenue-ranked.
- A weighted blend lets views, conversion rate, orders and margin each carry a share of one score.
- Conditions — in stock only, a price band, a tag — should apply per slot, not just globally.
4. Does a human still get the final word?
Automation that cannot be overruled gets switched off within a month. Pinning a product to position one, demoting another, or dragging a few into place should survive every scheduled refresh. If a pin evaporates on the next re-sort, the app is not usable by a merchandiser.
5. Can it prove the order worked?
This is the question that separates most of the field. If you publish a new order and conversion moves, was it the order, the season, or the ad spend? The only honest answer comes from attribution: each published order treated as a version, with the views, add-to-carts and orders recorded for the days it was live, shown side by side. Very few sorting apps do this. It is the feature we would not ship SellRank without.
6. What happens when it is wrong?
Live stores drift. Someone changes the sort in the Shopify admin, a bulk edit reshuffles positions, a sync half-finishes. Good software notices and tells you before you find out from a customer — drift monitoring with one-click restore, and drafts and schedules with auto-revert so a sale order rolls back on its own when the sale ends.
7. Is there evidence, or just adjectives?
'Accurate' is free to say. Ask what backs it. SellRank's engine is checked against more than 78,000 verification cases plus an audit that runs against a live store, reads every position back from Shopify and confirms it matches. You do not have to take our word for the number; the point is that any serious app should be able to answer the question at all.
So which app is best?
The honest answer is that it depends on your catalogue size and how much control you want. If you have one collection and never change it, Shopify's built-in sort is free and fine. If your first row decides your day — and for most stores on phones, it does — you want composition, a human override, first-party data and per-version proof. That combination is rare, and it is exactly what we built SellRank at LeelaRam Technologies to be. Start on the free plan with one collection and judge it against this list.
