Best selling, newest, price, alphabetical, manual. Shopify's built-in sorts are free and each one is right for something — here is the specific failure mode of each, with no marketing in between.
Before reaching for an app, it is worth knowing exactly what Shopify already gives you and where each option stops working. Several stores need nothing more than this page.
Best selling
Ranks by an all-time, store-wide sales figure. Right for: an established catalogue with stable demand and a short product list. Breaks when: a product that sold well two years ago outranks this week's winner, or an out-of-stock hero sits at position one absorbing clicks that convert to nothing. It has no notion of a time window, stock or margin.
Product title A–Z / Z–A
Right for: catalogues where the name carries the meaning — sizes, part numbers, editions. Breaks when: names are marketing copy, which is most of retail. Alphabetical order is effectively random with respect to what sells.
Price, low to high / high to low
Right for: a shopper who has already decided to browse by budget, usually after using a filter. Breaks as a default: low-to-high fills the first row with your cheapest, lowest-margin items; high-to-low can price the page out of the visitor's head before they scroll.
Date, new to old / old to new
Right for: a genuine New Arrivals collection. Breaks when: applied store-wide. Newness is not evidence — a brand new product with no sales at all takes the most valuable position on the page purely for being recent.
Manual
The most powerful option and the one nobody maintains. Right for: a curated edit that a person actively owns. Breaks when: the catalogue grows past a few dozen products, or the person who arranged it gets busy. A manual order is a photograph of what was true the day someone dragged it.
The gap all five share
- No time window — nothing distinguishes last week's demand from last year's.
- No stock awareness — sold-out products keep their position.
- No composition — you get one rule for the whole page, when the first row and the tail want different logic.
- No measurement — nothing tells you whether the order you chose earned more than the one before it.
Closing that gap is the entire reason sorting apps exist. SellRank fills it by writing into the manual sort — the powerful option — on a schedule, so a collection stays curated without anyone dragging anything, and keeps a record of what each published version earned.
