Shopify Search & Discovery vs a Collection Sorting App: What Each One Controls

15 October 20265 min readBy , LeelaRam Technologies

Shopify's free Search & Discovery app handles filters, search boosts, synonyms and product recommendations. It does not decide the order of a collection page. What each tool controls, where they overlap, and when you need both.

A question we hear often from merchants: "I already have Shopify's Search & Discovery app. Do I need a sorting app as well?" The answer depends on which page you are trying to fix. The two tools control different things, and the confusion comes from the word merchandising, which both get filed under.

Everything said about Search & Discovery here comes from Shopify's Help Center and the app's App Store listing as they read on 15 October 2026. Shopify publishes the app itself, and it is free.

What Search & Discovery controls

  • Filters. Shopify's Help Center describes creating custom filters that let customers refine their search and collection pages, by attributes such as price, availability, product type, tags or metafields.
  • Search results. Product boosts feature particular products in search results, and synonym groups make different words return the same results. These shape what a shopper sees after typing a query.
  • Product recommendations. You can choose related and complementary products for product pages, supplementing the recommendations Shopify generates automatically.
  • Search and discovery analytics. Reports on what shoppers search for, including searches that return nothing.

What it does not control

The default order of products on a collection page. Neither the Help Center pages nor the app's listing describe reordering the products inside a collection. That order is a separate setting on each collection in Shopify admin: Best selling, title, price, date created, or Manual. A boost lifts a product in search results, not in your Dresses collection.

That distinction matters because of how shoppers arrive. Most arrive on a collection page from a menu, an ad or a search engine, not by typing into your store's search box. What they see is the collection's default order, and on a phone the first few rows decide whether they scroll at all.

What a collection sorting app controls

A sorting app computes an order for each collection from data such as sales, stock, views, add-to-carts or margin, and writes it into the collection's manual sort order. Then it refreshes that order on a schedule, so the page keeps up with what is selling. Most add pins and demotions so a person keeps the final word. Better ones keep a history of each order and show whether the new one performed better.

SellRank, the app we make, is one of these. It writes into Shopify's own manual order, so the theme renders it like any hand-set order and nothing on the storefront changes except the sequence of products.

Where the two meet

  • Filters narrow the set; sorting orders it. When a shopper filters a collection, the products that remain still follow the collection's sort order unless they pick a different sort from the dropdown. A good default order makes filtered results better too.
  • The sort dropdown is the shopper's override. If a visitor chooses Price, low to high, that wins for their visit. The collection's default order is what everyone sees before they touch it.
  • Search is separate. A sorting app does not change search results; boosts and synonyms in Search & Discovery do. If shoppers who search can't find things, that is a Search & Discovery job.

Which one do you need?

  • Shoppers can't narrow a big collection by size, colour or price: set up filters in Search & Discovery.
  • Searches for a product name return the wrong items, or nothing: add synonyms and product boosts in Search & Discovery, and check its no-result searches.
  • Product pages need better 'you may also like' picks: set related and complementary products in Search & Discovery.
  • Collections open with sold-out, stale or low-margin products: that is the collection's sort order, and a sorting app is the tool.
  • You want to know whether changing a collection's order made money: you need a sorting app that measures each order it publishes.

A quick check on your own store

  1. 1Open your most-visited collection on a phone and note the first six products. Are they in stock, current and worth the click?
  2. 2In Shopify admin, open that collection and look at its Sort setting. That setting, not Search & Discovery, decides those six.
  3. 3Search your store for your best-selling product by a name a customer might use. If it does not come first, that is a job for boosts or synonyms.
  4. 4Filter the same collection by size or price and check the order of what remains. It follows the collection's sort setting.
  5. 5Fix whichever of the three looked worst first, then measure the page for a week before changing the next.

Common questions

Can Shopify Search & Discovery sort collection pages?+

Not according to Shopify's Help Center or the app's listing as of 15 October 2026. Search & Discovery handles filters, search boosts, synonyms, recommendations and search analytics. A collection's default product order is a separate setting on the collection in Shopify admin, or something a sorting app manages.

Do product boosts affect collection pages?+

Shopify's Help Center describes product boosts as featuring products in search results. They are not described as changing a collection's order. To move a product up a collection page, pin it in the collection's manual order or in your sorting app.

Will a sorting app break my Search & Discovery filters?+

A sorting app that writes Shopify's own manual sort order changes only the sequence of products in a collection. Filters still narrow that collection as before, and the filtered results follow the new order.

Is Search & Discovery free?+

Yes. Shopify publishes it and lists it as free on the Shopify App Store.
