SellRank Filters is the second app in the SellRank family: product filters for Shopify collection pages, built on Shopify's own Search & Discovery filters, that fit your theme, match size and stock on the same variant, and work properly on phones.
SellRank Filters is the second app in the SellRank family, and it's coming soon. SellRank decides the order a Shopify collection shows its products in. SellRank Filters decides how a shopper narrows that collection down: by size, colour, price, availability and whatever else your catalogue is really about. It is built on Shopify's own Search & Discovery filters rather than replacing them, it takes on your theme's look, and it is designed around one promise that sounds simple and isn't: when a shopper asks for size M in stock, every product they see has M in stock.
It is in development and being tested on Shopify's own themes now. This post explains what it will do, why we're building it, and how to check the filters you already have while you wait. The early list hears first and gets a first look before launch.
Why filters, and why a second app
A collection page has two jobs. The first is order: putting the products most likely to be bought where shoppers look first. That is what SellRank does. The second is narrowing: letting a shopper who knows what they want cut a 200-product collection down to the twelve that fit. A collection can be perfectly sorted and still lose a shopper who can't find their size.
Filters are also where small faults hurt most, because a shopper who uses them has already told you what they want. A filter panel that clashes with the theme, a phone filter that reloads the grid on every tap, or a result that includes a product with the wanted size sold out, each turns a shopper with clear intent into one who leaves. Those are the problems SellRank Filters is built around.
What SellRank Filters will do
Six things, each one aimed at a way filters lose shoppers today.
1. Fit your theme
The filter panel uses your theme's own fonts, colours and product cards, so nothing on the page looks borrowed. It goes in as a theme app block, which you add and position in the theme editor like any other block. There is no code to paste into your theme.
2. Match size and stock on the same variant
Most clothing, footwear and jewellery products are sold in variants, one per size, colour or metal. Stock lives on each variant, not on the product. So 'size M' and 'in stock' are both questions about variants, and the honest answer to a shopper who asks for both is the set of products where one variant is size M and that same variant is in stock.
SellRank Filters matches size, colour and availability on the same variant. Filter for size M in stock, and every product shown has M in stock. A shopper never opens a product from a filtered page only to find their size greyed out.
3. Work properly on phones
On a phone, the filters open in a bottom sheet. A shopper picks everything they want, then applies it all together with one Show products tap, so the grid doesn't jump around behind the panel after every choice.
4. Stay fast, and never become a dead end
The storefront script is small and results update without a page reload. If anything ever fails, the store falls back to Shopify's normal filter page, so a shopper always has a working way to filter. A filter app should never be the reason a collection page doesn't work.
5. Build clean filter values from data you already have
Good filters need clean values. Many stores have the facts in their tags, written several ways over the years, such as 'Red', 'red' and 'colour-red'. SellRank Filters can build filter values like colour from the tags and data you already have. It keeps them in the app's own fields, so nobody edits them by accident while tidying up products.
6. Work with SellRank, or on its own
Filtered results keep the collection's order. If a collection is sorted by SellRank, a shopper who filters for size M sees the size M products in SellRank's order, best first. Each app also works on its own, so you can use either one without the other.
Built on Search & Discovery, not instead of it
Shopify's Search & Discovery app is where storefront filters are set up, and SellRank Filters keeps it that way. Search & Discovery stays the source of your filters. SellRank Filters adds a storefront panel that fits your theme, a better filter experience on phones, and cleaner filter values from the data you already have.
That choice keeps you on Shopify's own foundations. Shopify's developer documentation describes product-level filters, such as category, product type, vendor, tags and product metafields, and variant-level filters, such as availability, variant options, price and variant metafields. It allows up to 25 filters. Different filters combine with AND, and values within one filter combine with OR, so 'size M or L, in black' means M or L, and black. Filtered pages keep Shopify's own URLs, with parameters such as filter.v.option.size=M, so a filtered link you share or put in an ad still works the way Shopify intends.
Check the filters you have today
You don't need to wait for launch to find out whether your current filters have the problems above. These checks take about ten minutes on a phone:
- 1Open your busiest collection on your phone, on mobile data rather than office Wi-Fi, and open the filters.
- 2Pick a size and the in-stock option. Note whether the grid reloads after each tap or waits until you're done.
- 3Open five products from the results and check that your chosen size can be added to the cart on each one. Any product where the size is sold out is a filter that isn't matching on the variant.
- 4Look at the filter values themselves. Duplicates such as 'Red' and 'red', or values no shopper would use, mean the underlying data needs tidying.
- 5Compare the filter panel with the rest of the page. Different fonts, colours or button styles make filters feel like an add-on rather than part of the store.
- 6Clear the filters and check that you land back on the full collection in its normal order.
If everything passes, your filters are in good shape. If the third step fails, that is exactly the problem SellRank Filters is designed to solve. Our guide to setting up Search & Discovery filters covers the rest, from choosing which filters to show to naming their values.
Pricing and launch
SellRank Filters will have simple flat plans, announced at launch and billed through Shopify. There will be no per-search or per-visitor meters, so a busy festive season never turns into a surprise bill.
Before launch, the app is being tested on real Shopify themes, starting with Shopify's own. It then goes through Shopify's App Store review, as SellRank did. We won't give a launch date we can't keep. The early list hears first, gets a first look before launch, and has a direct line to the person building it, so what you need can shape what ships.
Join the early list
If filters matter on your store, join the early list from the SellRank Filters page on our website. Leave your email and we'll tell you the moment there's something to try. In the meantime, SellRank can already decide what shoppers see first. It ranks any Shopify collection by real performance, such as views, add-to-carts, orders, revenue or conversion rate, can keep sold-out products off the first rows with an in-stock condition, and writes the order into Shopify's own manual sort with no theme edits. Install it free from the Shopify App Store at apps.shopify.com/sellrank-collection-sort.
